Sam from Photoworks came into the studio to demonstrate model direction and lighting. The setup he demonstrated was one he uses for commercial portraiture. Using himself as a model, he constructed the setup one light at a time, moving from the side main lights, to the model light, to the hair light and finally to the background light. Sam said it’s best to prepare the lighting setup before the model arrives for maximum efficiency. Sam stated that if he didn’t do it in half a day, he’d arrange the lighting setup the day before. Although simple, his model direction proved beneficial to creating better images. Taking a deep breath and straightening their shoulders, the ‘models’ appeared to be more involved in the pictures.
